The reconstruction of London after the devastating fire of 1666 gave the city a new creative freedom. In 1683 Purcell published his collection of 12 sonatas a trio, reflecting the aspirations of an entire generation that, from his teacher John Blow to the virtuous violinists Matteis and Keller, were inspired by the old continent.
